Family and friends
- I am happily married to Nan Fancher, who, in addition to many other accomplishments, has a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Illinois.
- We have a very precious daughter--see these pictures of Kristiana from 1999. Here's a picture of Kristiana wearing her Mouse Ears at age 1.5. She recently won honorable mention in a poetry/prose contest sponsored by Reading Is Fundamental. Over 1,100 kids competed in the contest.
- My dad, James T-P. Yao, is the former holder of the Lohman Professorship at Texas A&M University. During his long career, this University of Illinois alumnus has made important contributions to the areas of structural reliability, earthquake engineering, structural control, system identification and engineering education. NEW: He was mentioned on a University of Houston radio program.
- My mom, Anna Yao , sadly passed away in 2006.
- Research about the ocean environment is published through Sea Grant . My older sister Tina Yao is the award-winning Art Director at this Sea Grant office. She also is a very talented illustrator
- My younger sister Shana Yao is an award-winning Marketing Director of Fashion Square.
- My Auntie Dora is an artist in Boston. You can find samples of her work at her online gallery or her website.
- My cousin Bob Hsiung is a a really neat guy with many talents.
- His sister Carol Hsiung is also very talented.
- Mike Schneider is one of my volleyball friends from the University of Illinois Vball on Thursdays group.
- Bob Black, one of my friends from PALS'80 from long ago, is a published author.
- Ann Tucker is a talented Oil Pastel Artist and Editor for the international Oil Pastel Society Newsletter.
- Paolo Venini and his wife Claudia were very supportive when I was a visiting researcher at the University of Pavia under Professor Fabio Casciati. Paolo, Arturo Tena-Colunga, Dimitris Eliopoulos, Parvis Banan, Mike Wu, and I all played tennis together while graduate students at the University of Illinois.
- Ken Katano was one of my roommates during my undergraduate years at Illinois.
- Just renewed contact with Illini John Shalamskas and Chris Love (who contacted me through linkedin)
- David Bernholdt and Jan Musfeldt are U of I friends.
